Welcome to the web site of

Maurice Pyle - Woodsmith

WE ARE NOW TAKING BOOKINGS FOR THREE UNIQUE COURSES AT OUR WOODLAND WORKSHOP IN THE STUNNING MOUNTAINS OF EASTERN NORWAY

Our wooden house is the vibrant hub of the three courses we are offering this year, from where delicous home cooked food is served every day, including authentic elements of traditional Norwegian fare such as reindeer sausage and the very special goats cheese brunost. Well equipped and spacious bell tents sleep two people very comfortably and there is a newly installed wet room in the house

A combination of being close to nature while still being able to enjoy a hot shower!

  • Development Week                                                                                      (7 days, cost £575)  Mon 30 July - Sun 5 August 2012

The main tasks for this week include the building of an outdoor oven and a traditional Norwegian Ski-gaard fence, but equally important is the simple enjoyment of this superb Norwegian mountain and lake landscape in the company of like minded people. There'll also be mowing with scythes, evening beaver watches in our open canoes and a visit to one of our neigbours' farm and workshop. Most evenings there will be mini-workshops on the making of such items as shrink pots and birch bark sheaths.

There will be a free day in the middle of the week to self explore the fells and mountains that are on our doorstep or a full day guided expedition in our open canoes.

  • Scandinavian Craft with Final Year students from Saterglantan.

          (5 days, cost £575) Mon 13 - Fri 17 August 2012

We have invited three very talented final year students from the renowned Craft College Saterglantan in Sweden to join us for this week to share their skills. The programme is still to be finalised but could include knife blade forging, charcoal making, knife handle making and spoon carving. Mini-workshops most evenings will show how to make items such as shrink pots and birch bark sheaths.

There will be a free day in the middle of the week to self explore the fells and mountains that are on our doorstep or a full day guided expedition in our open canoes.

  • Bowls and Spoons  - A Norwegian Tradition                                               (5 days, cost £575)  Mon 27 -31 August 2012

Five days in wonderfully wild mid eastern Norway. Four days of inspiring woodcraft with a day off in the middle to simply relax or to further explore the mountains and lakes that define the area.   This course will take place under a pole and tarp woodland workshop. Tutor Maurice Pyle has been making hand carved bowls and spoons in the scandinavian style for many years, drawing inspiration from beautiful examples of original wooden ware found in the valley. Evening mini workshops inlude shrink box making and birch bark knife sheath making. And for the adventurous evening beaver watching in the open canoes.

There will be a free day in the middle of the week to self explore the fells and mountains that are on our doorstep or a full day guided expedition in our open canoes.
